Heartworm – Take Two

I was talking to my friend Lola the other day and she was telling me about a terrible experience she had. When she first moved to the United States, she had this pain in her chest. Her human took her to the doctor and it turns out she had heart worm. I looked at her astonished. After viewing the video on heart worm, I was amazed that she can look so good after such a frightful parasite was in her body.

She told me the doctor treated her with these intense drugs that made her feel sick to the stomach as in she lost her appetite. Imagine a dog with no appetite.

Lola looks so good.

I want a snack just thinking about it. She had to stay in her crate for months as the worms were killed from the drugs. The crate was to protect her from herself since she was so out of it, she would fall and it hurt. Luckily she didn’t injure herself, but you never know.

Now she is fine and gets her monthly dose of heart worm medicine, which she loves. It’s like eating a gummy bear. Since we both live in a town with lots of homeless people and assorted vagrants who own dogs, it is likely that many of our fellow canines don’t have their shots let along take monthly heart worm medicine which increases the risk for her and me to get bitten by a mosquito that has heart worm.

Now that spring is approaching and there is water everywhere, mosquitos should be abundant this year and I don’t know about you, but I want some of that chewy, tasty, heart worm medicine. Who needs the pain and downtime. Take good care of us because no matter what else you do, we love you.
